What Might Have Been: Imaginary History from Twelve Leading Historians
Synopsis:
Anthology of counterfactual scenarios.

Review of What Might Have Been: Imaginary History from Twelve Leading Historians:
This is an
anthology of
counterfactuals,
edited by Andrew Roberts:
The cover of the book contains
the words
"Leading Historians on Twelve 'What Ifs' of History",
and the book does indeed contain twelves scenarios.
The contributors include a variety of historians,
as well as Conrad Black (the former newspaper magnate who
was jailed in 2008,
but who is also known for writing biographies), and David Frum (a journalist, conservative commentator, and
former speechwriter for George W. Bush).
The scenarios in the book are:
- The Spanish Armada Lands in England by Anne Somerset
- The Gunpowder Plot Succeeds by Antonia Fraser
- King Charles I Wins the English Civil War by John Adamson
- Benedict Arnold Wins the Revolutionary War for Britain by Robert Cowley
- Napoleon Triumphs in Russia by Adam Zamoyski
- The Trent Incident Leads to War by Amanda Foreman
- Archduke Franz Ferdinand Survives Sarajevo by Norman Stone
- Lenin is Assassinated at the Finland Station by Andrew Roberts
- Stalin Flees Moscow in 1941 by Simon Sebag Montefiore
- The Japanese Do Not Attack Pearl Harbor by Conrad Black
- The Brighton Bomb Kills Margaret Thatcher by Simon Heffer
- The Chads Fall Off in Florida by David Frum
The majority of the scenarios are thoughtfully written essays
which explore the probable consequences of alternate decisions. Of course,
in alternate history,
there's always a question about the plausibility
of both alternate decisions, and of the consequences that might follow from them - and
people will inevitability have varying opinions on such matters.
There is however one essay which I did feel was both inappropriate for this volume,
namely David Frum's "The Chads Fall Off in Florida". It is written as a
fictional telephone conversation between President Al Gore, Richard Holbrooke, Wesley Clark
and others, discussing a response to the attacks of
September 11th
2001.
Frankly I found this essay to be a polemic containing American conservative's worst stereotypes
of liberals. The story is no doubt intended to make a point in favor of George W. Bush's robust response
to the attacks of
September 11th.
Regardless of what I might think about politics, I just didn't feel Frum's essay
worked as plausible alternate history.
I simply
didn't believe that Gore's alternate response was at all likely - and I suspect that maybe Frum himself
wouldn't actually claim he was writing about a realistic scenario (fictional Gore proposes "returning"
Spain to Syrian rule).
In short, this (with the exception of David Frum's essay which I didn't feel
belonged this book - perhaps in a political book it might be more appropriate)
is a collection of
thoughtful and intelligent
counterfactuals. There is a lot
to like about this book, and I would certainly recommend it. One final note though -
the cover of my copy has a picture of a Nazi moonlanding - this particular scenario
doesn't actually appear anywhere in the book (well, I couldn't find it!).

Throughout history, great and terrible events have often hinged on chance. Here, historian Andrew Roberts has assembled a team of his prominent colleagues, asking them to consider what might have happened if major world events had gone differently. Amanda Foreman, author of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, ponders what might have happened if Lincoln’s Northern States of America and Queen Victoria’s Great Britain had gone to war, as they so nearly did in 1861. George W. Bush’s former White House adviser, David Frum, considers a President Al Gore’s response to 9/11, while Conrad Black wonders how the U.S. might have entered World War II if the Japanese had not bombed Pearl Harbor. Whether it’s Stalin fleeing Moscow in 1941, as envisioned by Simon Sebag Montefiore, or Napoleon not being forced to retreat from it in 1812, as pictured by Adam Zamoyski, these essays posit a fascinating, sometimes horrifying parallel universe. |
